Drew Couver - The Lie of Safe Supply [King Hero Interview]

The Lie of Safe Supply with Drew Couver [King Hero Interview]
Live Friday, May 8th @ 2 PM CDT
In this episode of King Hero’s Journey…
What happens when something called “safe”… quietly removes the very thing that makes us human?
Choice. Agency. Will.
Across Canada, so-called safe supply programs are being positioned as compassionate solutions to addiction and homelessness.
But beneath the surface, there are deeper questions most people aren’t asking.
Is this truly help… or is it maintenance?
Is it reducing harm… or reinforcing dependency?
And who actually benefits when human beings are kept in cycles they can’t escape?
I’m joined by activist Drew Couver, who has been speaking out on the front lines against drug addiction, homelessness, and the normalization of free drug distribution through government-supported sites.
We’re going into the mechanics of addiction—not just as a personal struggle, but as a pattern that can be reinforced socially, structurally, and psychologically.
Inside this episode, we explore:
• why “safe supply” may not be as safe as it sounds
• how dependency can be systemically maintained
• the difference between real help and managed decline
• what gets lost when agency is removed from the equation
• the uncomfortable truths about addiction most people avoid
• what it actually takes to interrupt the cycle
This is for those willing to look past the narrative…
And question whether what’s being offered as care is actually keeping people stuck.
Because at the core of the Hero’s Journey is this:
No one is coming to save you.
And anything that replaces your will… comes at a cost.
Join us live.
About DrewCouver
I was born in New Westminster, British Columbia, and spent my early years in the heart of central British Columbia.
I grew up in a large family of seven, raised by parents who were married for over fifty years—and would still be together today if not for my father’s passing. Family, loyalty, and responsibility were foundational in my life from the beginning.
My younger sister, just a year and a half behind me, played a profound role in shaping who I am. She was born with medical challenges that made much of life harder for her. From an early age, I spent time in child development centres and alongside children living with disabilities. That experience didn’t just expose me to difference—it taught me empathy, patience, and how to truly see people.
Sports became another major influence. I found discipline and belonging through skiing, football, and baseball. My father was an elite Canadian competitor in biathlon—a sport combining cross-country skiing and marksmanship—and his commitment to excellence left a lasting imprint on me.
I’ve played football since childhood, but like many, my late teens and early twenties were derailed by addiction. I reached a point where I had to choose: live or die. I chose life.
Since my mid-twenties, I’ve played on a national title semi-professional football team, spent six seasons playing in the United States, and worked around elite performance and discipline at the highest levels.
Beginning in 1999, I also worked as a personal security professional, supporting high-profile entertainers and professional athletes across the NFL, NHL, and NBA.
In 2000, I transitioned into working as a private contractor with provincial governments and large agencies, creating safe, stable, and nurturing environments for youth in care and individuals in vulnerable situations. Over two decades, I negotiated hundreds of contracts and helped open more than three dozen foster care homes across the Lower Mainland.
Everything shifted during COVID.
I began questioning the systems I had worked within for years. So I bought a camera—and started listening again.
Today, I walk the streets across Canada, the United States, and the United Kingdom, talking to everyday people through Voices from the Curb. I document what people are living, not what institutions claim is happening.
At my core, I am a people person.
I help people level up—by listening, by telling the truth, and by creating space for voices that deserve to be heard.
And I’ll keep doing that—as long as the road keeps going.

I’m Beth Martens—founder of the House of Free Will, pattern hunter, archetype reader, podcaster, author, coach trainer, and
business coach. My calling has truly been a life-or-death matter. After a decade as a corporate VP in my family’s firm, eight transformative trips to India, and a three-year battle with cancer nearly 25 years ago, I turned to archetypes and deep deprogramming work to save my life.
Despite doing everything wrong based on limited health knowledge, I accessed the hidden inner roots of what was keeping me sick, stuck, and unconscious. Letting those patterns go changed everything. I went from dying to living almost overnight.
Today, I help people who love truth more than their beliefs—people who want to serve with their life’s work and walk their Hero’s Journey—to deprogram the beast system from within and stop unconsciously feeding the forces that harm us.
I host the King Hero interview series, where I spotlight leaders, entrepreneurs, movement makers, and lovers of freedom who are carving new paths in a world that desperately needs them. And I also share my own voice, insights, and stories through my new solo podcast, Beth of Fresh Air.
